(Note audacity cannot be installed on mobile device but resulting podcasts can be listened to on them)
Create simple podcasts using Audacity.  Provide sound files that your students can listen to.  All you need is to download Audacity to your computer free and connect a microphone (most laptops and netbooks have these built in).

Record messages for your students and export them as MP3s.  They can then listen to these on their PC or on their MP3 Player.

To download Audacity for free click here.  For a simple tutorial please watch the video below:
Example of use:

Our languages department have used this to allow students to record their speaking.  Students can then listen back to this, reflect on it and improve it.  They can also share their recordings with their peers or their teachers for feedback.

(Note Most Animoto features can be used on a mobile device although the order of images cannot be altered)
Animoto is a fantastic resource for creating engaging multimedia presentations.  Below is an example made to provide an update on how use of ICT at Cramlington Learning Village has developed in recent months.  This will give you an idea of what can be produced very easily using Animoto:
Just like the vast majority of tools on this website, Animoto is free! You can also set up Education Accounts.  To explore click here:

(Note Jing cannot be installed on mobile device but resulting videos can be watched on them)
Want to record tutorials or lessons that students can watch again?  Jing allows you to record your screen whilst talking over the top of what you are doing.  Jing is free and allows you to capture up to 5 minutes of video at a time.

Use Jing to provide instruction or to let students work at their own pace.  You could even use it to differentiate with different students watching different videos through a lesson or a unit of work.

Here is a link to download Jing for free.  Watch this video to see how Jing Works:
Example of use:

Our Enterprise department produced a series of revision podcasts which students could use in their own time on their own devices to revise from.  These were simply made available on our VLE.

YouTube is currently the most widely used Search Engine in the World (not Google!).  Our young students use YouTube to find out about all sorts, not just to search for music videos.

YouTube can be a fantastic resource for finding video which can be used to engage students.

You can now benefit from YouTube for Schools and YouTube for Education.

Is YouTube blocked in your school or authority?  Don't fear!  If you find any videos you want to use at home you can download them using www.keepvid.com so that you can bring them into school and use them.

Movie Maker is pre-installed on most Windows computers.  Assuming you have it installed you could use Movie Maker to produce videos which can be viewed on any device to engage students in a topic.  Or students could produce a video to engage their own audience.

You don't need a video camera to make use of this software, you can import photographs or images found on the Internet.

Here is a tutorial which will help you to use Movie Maker if you have never used it before:
